The Sandoval County Commission convened as the Canvassing Board, approved the canvass for the 2024 Municipal Office Elections for the City of Rio Rancho, the Town of Bernalillo and the Villages of Cuba and Jemez Spring on Friday, March 15.
The clerks for the four municipalities presented their election results to the commission.
Rio Rancho will hold a runoff election for Districts 1 and 6 City Councilors on April 9 because no candidate received the majority of votes in the March 5 election. Early voting began on March 27 and will end on April 6.
The swearing-in ceremony happened at the Rio Rancho City Hall for District 4 City Councilor Paul Wymer on March 28.
Bernalillo will have a recount to determine the winner of the second town councilor. The candidates are Phillip Valverde who received 333 votes and James S. Baca who secured 324 votes. Sharon Torres-Quintana secured her seat with 354 votes in the election. When?
Cuba will also hold a recount to determine the village councilor. Rebecca L. Salazar and Kyle S. Sandoval won seats on the council with 94 and 85 votes, respectively. The last spot will be determined between Monica A. Olivas, Cecilia M. Delgado and Tonya M. Sanchez. If Sanchez, who died before the election, wins the seat, the mayor would appoint someone to her seat. When?
Jemez Springs was the only election in the county that did not need a recount or runoff election. Michael Ray Nealeigh ran for mayor unopposed and the three trustee seats went to Judy Margaret Boyd with 50 votes, Robert M. Wilson had 44 and James C. McCue, who was a write-in candidate, had 40 votes.
