Located in the heart of Albuquerque’s International District, Animal Humane New Mexico is the state’s largest private 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization, serving more than 10,000 homeless and at-risk dogs and cats each year. Animal Humane supports animals in their care with veterinary care, social and emotional enrichment and lots of love.

The mission at Animal Humane is to support and improve the lives of New Mexico’s cats and dogs through sheltering, adoptions, humane education and veterinary services.

While Animal Humane and Bernalillo County Animal Services serve the same community, there are some key differences between the two.

Bernalillo County provides animal care and protection services for all of Bernalillo County. This includes livestock. The county is responsible for enforcing the county animal ordinances and laws. They provide services including housing stray animals, adoptions, low-cost spay and neuter assistance, pet licensing, and investigating animal cruelty/neglect.

Unlike the county, Animal Humane receives no county, state, or federal funding, relying completely on individual donations, grants, adoption fees, events, program revenue, and veterinary services to sustain our lifesaving work. Animal Humane is not affiliated with the East Mountain Animal Companion Project.

While county employs a team of Animal Control Officers capable of investigating and prosecuting animal cruelty, Animal Humane has no officers. Instead, Animal Humane transfers abused, neglected, and ill animals from shelters and rescues across New Mexico through our Project Fetch, offering a second chance to pets in need and freeing up vital space in overcrowded, underfunded shelters.

Since 2009, over 20,000 pets have made the lifesaving journey to Animal Humane through Project Fetch.

All shelter pets receive comprehensive medical care at the Donor-subsidized Veterinary Clinic. From basic spay and neuter to complex orthopedic surgery, the clinic team is prepared to improve the lives of every animal they encounter, ensuring these pets leave happy and healthy. The clinic also assists with the sterilization, vaccination and microchipping of pets from our Project Fetch partners, including Bernalillo County.

Animal Humane is proud to offer the following services to our community:
