Staff report
Bernalillo County is preparing for potential service adjustments on Thursday as PNM considers a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in the East Mountains due to extreme wildfire risk.
PNM alerted customers Tuesday to prepare for possible weather-related power outages this week due to strong winds and low humidity combining to increase wildfire risk.
To mitigate fire risks, PNM has implemented enhanced system settings that may lead to extended power outages. A PSPS, which involves intentionally cutting power to specific areas, is being considered as a last resort. Affected customers would be notified in advance.
If a PSPS occurs, several Bernalillo County facilities will close, including Whispering Pines Senior Center, Los Vecinos Community Center, and Vista Grande Community Center. After-school programs at these locations may also be canceled.
Residents impacted by an outage can access WiFi at any other Bernalillo County community center. The East Mountain Transfer Station will remain open but will accept cash only. Drivers should expect delays at certain intersections due to potential traffic signal outages. Public safety services will continue operating as normal.
PNM has adjusted system settings, which may lead to longer power restoration times due to required manual inspections and repairs. Residents are advised to monitor conditions and prepare for potential service interruptions. More information on the PSPS can be found at www.pnm.com/wildfire-safety.
