The City of Albuquerque is serving up a $600,000 assist to the North Valley senior housing community known as 1212 Candelaria, located near Candelaria Road and 12th street.
Officials said the affordable housing project is scheduled for an installation of new water main lines that will service all 50 households occupied by low-income elderly and disabled residents. 1212 Candelaria was built in 1973. Officials said Friday that leaking water main lines have increasingly become a problem in the past two years, causing excessive water bills, flooding and expensive repairs.
“While we work on building more housing to meet our city’s needs, it’s just as important to preserve and keep up the affordable housing we already have,” Joseph Montoya, deputy director of housing in the city’s Health, Housing & Homelessness department, said in a statement.
In addition to the water main lines, the money will fund repairs to driveways and sidewalks, and include a landscaping refresh. The funds were directed from the city to the Albuquerque Housing Authority (AHA) through a community development block grant.
“We are appreciative of our ongoing partnership with the city,” AHA executive director Linda Bridge, said in a statement. “We are faced with a challenge of preserving our aging housing stock that provides essential rental assistance to the households that reside in the units.”
The work is expected to begin in March.
