Shoppers outside a West Central Walgreens got a vision of old-fashioned wild west law enforcement last week.
Officers from APD’s horse-mounted unit were on patrol near Coors and Central on March 20 when an employee of a nearby Walgreens alerted them to a man who had just shoplifted from the store.
Three officers (and their horses) quickly gave chase and thanks to the officer’s body camera viewers can go along for the wild ride.
In the video, the man begins to run on foot across a parking lot and into a busy street, followed by the mounted officers. Oncoming traffic stops quickly as the suspect and the large horse approach headed the wrong way into traffic. Officers yell multiple times, “Stop!” and “You are being detained!” as they close the gap. Two other horse-mounted officers quickly join, according to the video. In less than 30-seconds the horses have overtaken and surrounded the man and he surrenders without incident.
The man, 30, allegedly stole $230 worth of merchandise and was charged with shoplifting, eluding/evading police on foot, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to APD.
