Many New Mexico veterans don’t claim all the property tax exemptions to which they are entitled, and the Bernalillo County Assessor’s Office is attempting to change that by hosting a special outreach event Thursday.

“We appreciate our veterans and want them to receive every exemption allowed,” County Assessor Damian Lara said. “This will help get them in the system and available for expanded exemptions when they become available.”

The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services will have personnel on hand to help any client needing a certificate of eligibility.

Registration for new veterans benefits included in constitutional amendments approved by voters in the recent election will not be available during Thursday’s event. State leaders will develop an implementation process regarding those benefits in the 2025 legislative session, which starts Jan. 2.

More information on tax and other benefits available to veterans and military families is available here.
