The top Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives is ending the week in New Mexico, to support the party’s candidates and discuss priorities.

Thursday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) is meeting with U.S. Reps. Teresa Leger Fernández, Gabe Vasquez and Melanie Stansbury in Albuquerque to discuss Project 2025’s implications for New Mexico.

Project 2025 is a policy initiative developed by The Heritage Foundation, a

conservative think tank. Proponents tout it as a blueprint for a transition to a government responsible to its citizens, while critics consider it authoritarian and dangerous to American democracy.

A press release from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee says the document “poses significant threats to the fundamental rights and freedoms of New Mexicans.”

The release also admonishes Yvette Herrell, Gabe Vasquez’s Republican opponent in the Second Congressional District race, saying her support of Project 2025 has earned her a 100% rating from the Heritage Foundation.

“She is in lockstep with MAGA Republicans’ plan to roll back your rights,” the release states.

Friday, Stansbury will host a “community conversation” with Jeffries to discuss House Democrats’ efforts.

A Stansbury press release says the talk will focus on “how Democrats are delivering for New Mexicans by lowering costs for Americans, protecting reproductive freedom (and) investing in communities all across the state.”

They’ll also discuss the party’s current initiatives, its efforts to find solutions for New Mexicans’ everyday issues and future steps for Democratic leaders.
