Bernalillo County Commissioners approved a zoning change this week that will potentially swell the ranks of food trucks in the county.

The trucks, also known as mobile food establishments, will be allowed to operate in areas zoned for commercial and light industrial uses, setting up the possibility of new mobile food courts.

Previous regulations permitted up to two food trucks on a lot. Zoning administrator Maggie Gould told commissioners during their Tuesday meeting the changes could mean more trucks are authorized for larger sites, provided applicants meet requirements for parking, restrooms and sanitation.

She said the hope is the change leads to economic opportunities for food truck operators and expanded dining options for workers in the county’s industrial areas.

Gould identified South Broadway and North Fourth Street as areas that could potentially benefit.
