It’s that time of the year again.

The Pinto Bean Fiesta is right around the corner and it is set to be a full day of fun for local folks.

The Fiesta originally started in the 1980s to be able to recognize the local farm industry and pinto bean farmers.

“It is known as the Pinto Bean Valley, and because the majority of pinto beans are grown, for the state in our area,” Brenda Tapia, city spokesperson, said of the Sept. 30 festivities

To kick off the Pinto Bean Fiesta activities there will be a parade starting at 9 a.m. The parade will take place on Main Street in Moriarty. It’s set to start at the roadway area and go all the way through to Crossly Park. It’s recommended to get there early so that way you can secure a great spot to watch the parade, Tapia said.

The fun doesn’t end after the parade is completed, it is just beginning.

The main festivities of the fiesta will start at 10 a.m. at Main City Park where the water towers are. The Fiesta is set to have all the crowd favorites that it has had in years past including live performances throughout the day, more than 60 vendors selling their art, along with local pinto bean farmers selling pinto beans.

However, there is one event that is new at this year’s Pinto Bean Fiesta and that is the Cornhole Tournament.

The tournament originally started as a Horseshoe Tournament and was a very popular event amongst the crowds, but this year it was decided to give the tournament a fresh look. “They usually would do horseshoes. But I started playing cornhole recently, and I’m local. It’s become a real popular sport. So we thought maybe this year we’d mix it up and do cornhole,” said Bobby Tapia, who is helping put on the tournament alongside his mother/spokesperson, Kelli Tapia.

The cornhole tournament is open for anyone to join and there is no limit on how many teams can participate. The tournament will be set up in a 6 PPR Style, this is because a lot of the teams playing are not professional cornhole players and to make scoring a little simpler.

All the boards for the tournament were provided by New Mexico Custom Cornhole.

“We provided them with it was four sets of custom cornhole boards and cornhole bags. They’re also getting two sets of trophies for their winners,” said Josh Malecki, co-owner of New Mexico Custom Cornhole.

Winners of the tournament will not only earn a trophy, but also a cash prize. Those interested in participating in the tournament can sign up on the day of the Pinto Bean Fiesta or online at preview.page.link/app.scoreholio.com/link/3tro. The tournament is expected to start at 1 p.m.

The Pinto Bean Fiesta will close out with the Pinto Bean Dance from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Moriarty Civic Center. The dance will have music from DJ RJ of B&X Sound. The dance has an admission fee of $7 per person and $10 for couples.
