Tensions continue to rise between the Town of Edgewood and the Moriarty-Edgewood School District as plans to demolish the former Edgewood Elementary School buildings are still in discussion. The building in question now houses the community library and town hall.
On March 14, the Edgewood Commission held a town meeting to inform the town of the district’s Facilities Master Plan, which presented proposals to replace the Edgewood Elementary School’s buildings and consolidate elementary schools into two campuses and middle schools into one campus. Edgewood residents and commissioners voiced their concerns about how these plans would impact the community.
The MESD school board held a meeting on March 19 and while residents attended and told the board of these concerns, no decision was made. The district’s superintendent, Todd Bibiano, said he is working with board members to schedule a community meeting to discuss this issue further.
“The town is waiting to hear what their next steps may be,” said Linda Burke, Edgewood’s community liaison. “The town wants to stay informed on where they are in the process, because it certainly impacts the entire community, whether they have children in the schools or not.”
Bibiano said a meeting has been set for April 9 at 6 p.m. at the Moriarty High School.
