Starting Jan. 7, New Mexico is set to experience significant snow coverage, high winds and frosty temperatures.
While no heavy snow is expected, the icy temperatures can impact travel and outdoor conditions.
Precautions are advised to deal with the light coating since the snow is set to reach a maximum of six inches, with the lowest prediction being three inches in the southern mountain regions.
According to meteorologist Grant Tosterud’s forecast, light snow will start in northern New Mexico and spread southward.
Potent winds up to 55 mph in Albuquerque will bring subzero wind chills. Southern areas will be affected by rain and snow, while Albuquerque will experience minimal snow.
Wednesday will be a freezing cold day for the rest of the week, with expected subzero winds in some areas. South of I-40, light snow will continue, with snow buildup that could create one-inch slippery roads.
A second round of snow is expected on Thursday, affecting central, southern, and eastern New Mexico. This could cause minor travel issues, so precaution is highly recommended.
Temperatures will remain below average until Jan. 10. Misty conditions will stick around in eastern areas.
As for the weekend anticipation, warm temperatures are expected to return, although a storm system could bring subtle snow to the northern mountains on Sunday.
Changes in elevation can significantly affect travel conditions. Higher areas can experience more harsh weather, while valleys can remain calm. Remote places can also pose additional threats to travelers.
Recommendations for weather safety include:
- Staying informed about weather conditions
- Checking road closures
- Preparing for potential isolation
- Creating an emergency kit that includes food, water and other essential items
- Dressing in layers
- Avoiding travel during storms
- Taking caution of carbon monoxide poisoning when using heaters
- Keeping a fully charged phone
