The National Weather Service issued a severe weather alert for the New Mexico community. 

According to the NWS website, extreme cold temperatures will remain in effect from 5 p.m. to 11 a.m. MST on Tuesday. 

The coldest temperatures of the season are here. An arctic air mass will hit New Mexico tonight, causing below-freezing conditions throughout the state. 

The coldest night of the week is expected to be Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day, with icy wind chills of as low as -30 degrees Fahrenheit in some places.

In Edgewood, temperatures are expected to dip to around -1, with wind chill values as low as -12. A high near 31 degrees is expected for Tuesday, with wind chill values as low as -4. 

Moriarty is forecast to be even colder with a chance of flurries before 8 p.m. Monday with a low around -8 degrees. Tuesday’s high is expected to be 34 degrees with wind chill values as low as -5. 

Tijeras is projected to have a low of around 5 degrees and wind chill values as low as -6 on Monday with a high near 30 degrees and wind chill values as low as zero on Tuesday.

Residents are advised to prepare for this extremely cold weather and take all the necessary precautions to stay warm. 

Safety precautions include protecting other individuals, pets, pipes and plants as wind chills are expected to feel significantly colder than their actual temperature.
