The conversation of a replacement for former Moriarty City Councilor Steve Anaya was tabled at the council meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 23, weeks after Anaya swore in as mayor.

In his first full meeting as the mayor after former Mayor Brandon Webb resigned, Anaya and the council discussed a replacement for his city council seat.

According to Anaya, there were two community members who said they wanted to go for the position. A few more expressed some interest, he said.

“We’ll review all the applicants, figure out a path forward and then move forward,” Anaya said.

The new city councilor will finish Anaya’s term, which ends Dec. 31 — just under two months after the regular City Council election.

Of the candidates who are currently running for city council, none expressed interest in the replacement seat, Anaya said. The seat will be just a two-month position, whereas the full term will last for four years after the election. Aside from Anaya’s empty seat, there are two open positions for city councilor and one for the municipal judge in the upcoming election, which will take place on Nov. 4.

The next City Council meeting will take place on Nov. 12, and the council will decide how to move forward with the open position. Anaya said there’s no guarantee that the spot will be filled that day — but there’s “probably a pretty good chance,” he said.
