The Moriarty City Council will discuss and act upon appointing a new city councilor to replace former councilor Steve Anaya, who was recently appointed mayor, during its city council meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Also on the agenda is approval of funds to the University of New Mexico EMS Academy, approval of a local club to use the civic center, approval of the job description for a maintenance custodian at the civic center, approval of implementing new names for the Moriarty Veterans Monument, and approval of a fall cleanup for the week after Halloween.

The meeting will be the first full meeting Anaya is involved in since being appointed mayor during the last meeting on Oct. 8. Anaya said in an interview with The Independent that, in his new position, financial recordkeeping is his top priority right now.

As he finishes former Mayor Brandon Webb’s term, the council needs a person to fill Anaya’s council seat. Councilors will consider the appointment and act upon it at Wednesday’s meeting, according to the agenda. Whoever is appointed will serve out the remainder of the year with whoever is elected to the seat in November, taking over in January.

The civic center will be seeing two changes, according to the consent agenda. Councilors will discuss and approve allowing the 4-H club to use it on the second Thursday of each month. Members of the club will perform community service in lieu of payment.

The maintenance custodial position will also be discussed and approved. The new part-time position will pay $15 per hour with up to 19.5 hours per week.

Councilors will also approve the purchase of $12,900 for 60 names and medallions for the Moriarty Veterans Monument. They will also approve an allocation of the cost for one student to train at the UNM EMS Academy Service Sponsored Certified Paramedic Course, according to the agenda.
