The New Mexico Cattle Growers’ Association will host its annual Cattlemen’s College focused on protecting livestock from emerging disease threats Dec. 10 at the Hotel Albuquerque.
The one-day conference, titled “The Healthy Herd: What is it? What’s It Take? How to Protect or Reclaim It?” will address biosecurity measures and best practices as ranchers face potential mobility restrictions from New World Screwworm and Foot and Mouth Disease.
“This year’s program is particularly timely,” said Jim Thorpe, chair of the association’s research committee. “We receive daily reports about threats to livestock health.”
The event begins at 8 a.m. on the first day of the Joint Stockmen’s Convention and features presentations from university researchers, veterinary consultants and industry representatives.
Craig Gifford from New Mexico State University’s Animal and Range Science Department will open with an overview of maintaining healthy herds. John Wenzel, NMSU Extension veterinarian, will moderate morning sessions on disease prevention and herd management.
Veterinary experts from Merck Animal Health and Zoetis Animal Health will present current vaccine protocols during a session on building immunity. Nutrition specialists from ADM Animal Nutrition, Purina Animal Health and Zinpro will discuss supplements and feeding strategies that support herd health.
New Mexico State Veterinarian Samantha Holeck will provide updates on critical disease and pest issues threatening New Mexico livestock during the afternoon session. Danelle Bickett-Weddle, a veterinary consultant with Preventalytics, will guide participants through developing ranch-specific biosecurity plans required for cattle movement during disease-related restrictions.
The conference concludes with a panel of New Mexico livestock producers sharing their experiences with vaccinations, supplements and biosecurity measures.
“This is a program filled with practical information you can use on the ranch,” Thorpe said.
Registration costs $50 and includes lunch and materials. The registration deadline is Dec. 1. Interested participants can register by calling 505-247-0584 or visiting www.nmagriculture.org.
