Students from Moriarty High School spoke in front of the Moriarty City Council on Wednesday to request rental of the civic center for a reduced price, so they can have their prom this year at a new venue.
The six students were all from the Moriarty High School class of 2027 student council. In speeches to the city councilors and the mayor, the students requested that they rent out the civic center for $221 — a request that the city council passed unanimously. The high school’s prom has been held in the school gym for years, the students said. They expressed their gratitude for that space while seeking something new.
“With your approval of the $221 rental cost, we will be able to arrange a meaningful event, distinct from previous ones,” one student said.
They vouched that they would complete community service to give back to their community and show their thanks for using the city’s resources.
All councilors expressed their gratitude to the kids for their speech and involvement in their community.
“You’re our future, you’re our youth and I think we’ve got to make that investment,” Councilor Jeremy Trujillo said.
