The Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners will consider strengthening protections for immigrant residents and approving multiple affordable housing developments when it meets at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Ken Sanchez Commission Chambers.

Vice Chair Adriann Barboa and Commissioner Barbara Baca are sponsoring legislation that would establish “safe community spaces” and affirm the county’s commitment to serving all residents regardless of immigration status. The proposed ordinance and resolution would formalize the county’s approach to transparency and public safety for immigrant communities.

The commission will also vote on several affordable housing initiatives, including amendments to increase funding for the Casitas del Camino project to $20 million and extensions for the West Mesa Ridge A project. Two new affordable housing developments — the 288-unit Ventana Ranch Apartments and 244-unit Manzano Mesa Apartments — are set for consideration under a property tax abatement program aimed at maintaining affordability.

In other business, commissioners will review a comprehensive assessment of all county boards and commissions, sponsored by Chair Eric Olivas and Commissioner Frank Baca. The resolution calls for evaluating the structure and effectiveness of the county’s various advisory bodies.

Budget matters include approval of fiscal year 2026 adjustments totaling $212.2 million in revenue and $236.9 million in expenditures. The commission will also consider emergency funding of $760,000 for Hope Village, a single-site housing program operated by Hope Works under the county’s Behavioral Health Gross Receipts Tax.

Transportation infrastructure projects on the agenda include cooperative agreements with the New Mexico Department of Transportation for the Fourth Street Road Diet Project, Barcelona Reconstruction Project phases, and planning for the I-40 TradePort South Broadway HUB.

The Behavioral Health Advisory Board chairs will provide a quarterly update on opioid settlement funding allocation and project outcomes.

October has been designated as National Cyber Security Awareness Month in a proclamation sponsored by Commissioner Walt Benson, who is also sponsoring recognition of VFW Voice of Democracy participants.
