The town of Mountainair has completed micro-sealing work on three streets and announced plans for a comprehensive cleanup initiative targeting dilapidated structures, Mayor Peter Nieto announced Friday.
Sunset Avenue has reopened to traffic, while Third Street and part of Cedardale Avenue were expected to reopen later Monday afternoon, Nieto said.
Additional road improvements are planned for spring 2026 with newly secured funding, according to the mayor’s announcement. The long-awaited Roosevelt Street project is in the planning stage and expected to be completed in early 2026.
The town’s curb-to-curb rebuilds are expanding some roads by more than six feet, Nieto said. While many Mountainair streets have had curbs for years, they haven’t been used in recent decades, he said.
Nieto praised the town’s Public Works Department staff — Juan Rubi, Robert John Torres, TJ Lopez, Daniel Archuleta and Supervisor Carl Archuleta — for preparing roads and assisting with the improvements.
The mayor announced what he called “the largest cleanup and improvement effort in Mountainair’s history.” More than five residents have signed up to have old, unsafe and dilapidated structures removed from their properties, with more than a dozen properties expected to participate overall.
The town offers a payment plan to make the structure removal process affordable, Nieto said. Residents interested in participating can call Town Hall to provide their contact information and details about unsafe structures needing demolition and removal.
The town also plans to bring other neglected properties before the Town Council for abatement and cleanup proceedings.
Nieto thanked residents for their patience during road closures and for following signage and worker instructions. He also acknowledged the Mountainair Town Council for approving and supporting the projects.
