With its centuries-old multicultural heritage, you can bet New Mexico has a strong history of arts and crafts — from Native American weaving to Mexican tinwork and everything in between. Albuquerque is dotted with galleries of all sorts. Old Town is home to a treasure trove of traditional , fine and folk art work. Lapis Room Art Gallery (303 Romero St. NW), Ghostwolf Gallery (206 1/2 San Felipe St. NW), Amapola Gallery (205-D Romero St. NW), Gallery Hózhó at Hotel Chaco (2000 Bellamah Ave. NW) and Expressions Artist Community & Gallery (303 Rio Grande NW) will help you scratch the surface of what the local art scene has to offer. Nob Hill, along Central Ave., is a bit more contemporary with Mariposa (5600 Central Ave. SE) representing a wide range of modern artists and Masks y Mas (3106 Central Ave. SE) showing off a funky selection of handcrafted Mexican imports, high-quality prints and works from popular local artists like Brandon Maldonado, Mike Graham De La Rosa and Kenny Chavez. Black Wall Gallery near Midtown (2125 San Mateo Blvd NE) hosts contemporary local art shows and punk rock concerts. (How’s that for variety?) Secret Gallery (recently relocated to the hip ARRIVE Albuquerque boutique hotel at 717 Central Ave. NW) specializes in Albuquerque’s cutting edge artists, photographers and sculptors. Toward Uptown, you can run through The Curated Creative (7401-H Menaul Blvd. NE), The Gallery ABQ (8210 Menaul Blvd. NE) and Palette Contemporary Art and Craft (7400 Montgomery Blvd. NE) for a string of curated exhibits. Further into the Northeast Heights, you’ll hit Weems Gallery and Framing (5935 Wyoming Blvd. NE), a longtime local landmark famous for its community gallery showcasing the artwork of countless local artists since it opened its doors in 1981. Head up Fourth Street and you’ll pass Studio J Contemporary Art (6601 Fourth NW) in the historic Los Ranchos de Albuquerque neighborhood — which leads to the Village of Corrales, lined with great little galleries like Corrales Bosque Gallery (4685 Corrales Rd.), Corrales Fine Arts (4685 Corrales Rd.) and Art Scape Gallery (4436 Corrales Rd.). And if you want make a tour of it, the Albuquerque Art Business Association hosts the ARTScrawl (artscrawlabq.org) at galleries all over town while DowntownABQ MainStreet organizes ABQ ArtWalk (abqartwalk.com) throughout the Downtown neighborhood. Both take place on Friday, Oct. 3.
