It wasn’t exactly a five-alarm fire, but four municipal departments still answered the call Tuesday when a cat found itself in quite the predicament—stranded at the top of a telephone pole in Mountainair with apparently no exit strategy.

What started as one very bad day for a local feline turned into an all-paws-on-deck rescue mission involving Mountainair Fire & Rescue, Mountainair EMS, Animal Control and Public Works. The unusual operation successfully brought the high-flying cat back down to earth and into the arms of its relieved owner.

The rescue proves that sometimes the most important emergencies are the ones that tug at heartstrings rather than headlines.

“Big or small, emergency or not, we’re proud to serve our community,” Mountainair Fire & Rescue said in a statement that probably made the grateful cat purr with appreciation.

While fire departments typically battle blazes and race to medical emergencies, Tuesday’s mission required a different kind of heroism—the patient, careful work of coaxing down one very stubborn (or possibly embarrassed) cat who had climbed higher than its courage could handle.
