A photography exhibition commemorating the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina will open Friday at Madrid’s Roadrunner Studio and Gallery, featuring images captured in New Orleans in the weeks following the 2005 disaster.

“Aftermath: New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina” showcases the work of Louisiana native Trey Corkern, now of Madrid. The exhibition opens at 5 p.m. Friday and runs until 8 p.m.

Corkern’s collection features black-and-white photographs taken with plastic Holga cameras, capturing scenes from “The City That Care Forgot” during the immediate aftermath of the storm that devastated the Gulf Coast in late August 2005.

The lo-fi aesthetic of the Holga cameras, known for their distinctive light leaks and soft focus, provides a unique perspective on the hurricane’s impact on New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Aug. 29, 2005, causing catastrophic flooding that displaced hundreds of thousands of residents and left more than 1,800 people dead across the Gulf Coast.

Roadrunner Studio and Gallery is located at 2861 Highway 14 in Madrid. The Friday evening opening is free and open to the public.
