Prospective candidates for municipal offices in Tijeras, Edgewood, Moriarty, Estancia and Mountainair will have nine hours on Tuesday to file their declarations of candidacy for the Nov. 4 regular local election.
According to the official proclamation issued by New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, filing opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. at the County Clerk’s office.
The deadline marks the start of the election cycle for several key municipal races across central New Mexico:
Tijeras will elect two village councilors to four-year terms.
Edgewood has four commissioner seats on the ballot. Voters will choose candidates for District 1, District 2, District 4 and District 5 commissioner positions, along with a municipal judge. The District 2 and District 5 seats are special elections to fill the remaining two years of four-year terms.
Moriarty will select two city councilors and one municipal judge, all for four-year terms.
Estancia voters will choose a mayor, two trustees and a municipal judge, each serving four-year terms.
Mountainair will elect a mayor and two councilors to four-year terms.
All municipal elections are nonpartisan, meaning candidate names will appear on ballots without party designations.
The regular local election is scheduled for Nov. 4. Municipalities that have opted into ranked-choice voting or traditional runoffs will conduct those elections according to their adopted procedures.
Candidates who miss Tuesday’s filing deadline can still participate as write-in candidates by filing a declaration of intent between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
The proclamation also includes numerous school board, soil and water conservation district, and other local government races.
