U.S. Eagle Federal Credit Union became the first credit union in New Mexico to offer pet insurance to its members and donated $5,000 to a local animal welfare organization, the financial institution announced Thursday.

The credit union offers pet insurance through its Perks Plus Checking account via Carefree Pet, a program that includes access to affordable coverage through MetLife Pet Insurance. Members can visit any licensed veterinarian nationwide without breed or age restrictions.

“As the first credit union in New Mexico to offer this benefit, it is part of our ‘people mean more’ philosophy by improving the quality of life in the communities we serve,” Marsha Majors, president and CEO of U.S. Eagle Federal Credit Union, said in a press release.

The insurance program includes ID tags, 24/7 virtual pet care, medication discounts and warranty protection for pet damage to home items.

The Albuquerque-based credit union also donated $5,000 to Animal Humane New Mexico, a nonprofit that provides sheltering, adoptions, humane education and veterinary services for cats and dogs. The funds were raised between April and June when members opened new checking accounts.

Val Wilson, executive director of Animal Humane New Mexico, said the insurance helps pet owners provide better care for their animals.

“From animals in good health to those that are aging, pet insurance can be beneficial in supporting the care of owned pets, which improves the health of our entire community of dogs and cats,” Wilson said.

Majors said the insurance gives members “financial support necessary to make the right decisions for themselves and their pet’s quality of life when their pets become ill or hurt.”
