New Mexico gubernatorial candidate Deb Haaland will visit Moriarty on August 9 as part of her “Lift Up New Mexico Tour,” bringing her campaign to a community where nearly 40% of residents live below the federal poverty line.
The Moriarty stop is one of 16 rural communities Haaland plans to visit through August as she seeks the 2026 Democratic nomination for governor, according to a campaign press release. The tour focuses on making life more affordable for New Mexicans amid a statewide housing crisis that has left 32,000 low-income households without affordable housing options.
“Every single New Mexican has a role to play in our future. It’s why I’ll campaign in every corner of this state so we can make life more affordable and build that future together,” Haaland said in the campaign statement.
The affordability message resonates particularly strongly in Moriarty, where the median household income of $27,446 falls well below state and national averages, according to New Mexico Demographics.
Haaland’s campaign has not yet announced specific times or locations for the Moriarty visit.
Haaland faces two other Democrats in the June 2026 primary: Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman, who announced his candidacy in April, and former Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima, who entered the race in May.
Haaland, who has raised $2.9 million since launching her campaign in February, would become the first Native American woman elected governor if successful.
On the Republican side, Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull became the first GOP candidate to formally announce his candidacy in April. Former New Mexico Supreme Court Chief Justice Judith Nakamura, who served from 2017-2020, is considering a run but has not formally announced.
Haaland’s “Lift Up New Mexico Tour” includes stops in the following communities:
- July 12: Shiprock, Cuba
- July 19: Portales, Clovis, Hobbs
- July 24: Grants, Reserve
- July 25: Lordsburg
- July 26: Alamogordo, Truth or Consequences
- July 27: Mora, Roy
- August 9: Moriarty, Fort Sumner, Tucumcari
- August 11: Albuquerque
The tour follows Haaland’s 19-stop launch tour, where her campaign says she met thousands of New Mexicans and listened to their concerns about the state’s future.
The 2026 New Mexico gubernatorial election will be held Nov. 3, 2026, with the Democratic primary scheduled for June 2026.
