The City of Albuquerque unveiled a new patio space this week at the Gateway Center, aiming to enhance the facility’s commitment to providing low-barrier services that foster healing and community for its residents.

The newly completed outdoor area features shade canopies, tables, benches, and a bike rack. It also includes a small dog park for residents’ pets, and planter boxes are set to be installed to facilitate a community garden.

It is also the final element of the first phase of the Housing and Treatment Navigation Center. Construction began in 2021. Now, three out of four services at Gateway Center are operational. Medical Sobering, the fourth and final service, is expected to come online this fall.

“We know the pathway to stability may be overwhelming at times, which is why a space to socialize, get some fresh air, and unwind is critical,” Mayor Tim Keller said. “Having low-barrier support is essential to helping people move forward, and that includes a welcoming space where pets are allowed, because they’re part of the healing process too.”

Lisa, a resident of the Gateway Center, expressed her appreciation for the new amenity.

“To be able to just come out and relax, people don’t realize when you’re in this position, what this patio means to the residents who live here day in and day out,” she said. “To me, it’s just amazing.”

The Housing and Treatment Navigation Center operates a 90-day program, offering residents access to case management, workforce training, and connections to substance use disorder treatment, including referrals to Ideal Option, an outpatient treatment center located within the Gateway Center.

“When someone is ready to accept services and take their first step toward recovery and treatment, we know they don’t want to choose between support and their beloved companion,” Health, Housing, and Homelessness Director Gilbert Ramirez said. “In addition, a Recreational space creates an area where people can build community and talk about their shared experiences.”

Bradbury Stamm Construction completed the construction of the patio, which was funded by $1.7 million in Federal Capital Outlay funding.
