The Edgewood Town Commission approved several key measures during its June 24 meeting, including a fireworks ban prompted by drought conditions, the creation of a new water utility ordinance and authorization to seek funding for road improvements.

The commission voted 5–0 to approve the Water Utility Ordinance, establishing Edgewood’s authority to create a municipal wholesale water utility.

The ordinance does not authorize residential water billing or system takeovers but allows the town to acquire and manage water rights—a crucial step in long-term planning and fire preparedness.

Town officials said that the ordinance positions Edgewood to seek state and federal grants for infrastructure and ensures greater water security for future growth.

“This is definitely something that should have been taken care of a long time ago, and I’m glad that we’re going to handle it now and set up the town for success in the long run,” said Commissioner Stephen Murrillo.

Commissioners also reviewed the proposed Solid Waste Ordinance, intended to create consistent guidelines for trash service, contractor coordination and enforcement.

The measure aims to reduce illegal dumping and service gaps, but concerns about clarity, rural access and due process led the commission to postpone a vote.

Officials instead scheduled a public workshop on July 8 at 5 p.m. to review and revise the ordinance with input from all departments and the public.

The commission also approved a resolution authorizing the town to enter into a road funding grant agreement with the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The grant will help finance upcoming road repairs and improvements.

Additional discussion included early planning for a future civic center, continued coordination for Fourth of July festivities and an announcement recognizing the Edgewood Animal Shelter for achieving a 90% no-kill rate.

A new play area for dogs has also been added to the facility.
