On Thursday, June 19, several communities across New Mexico’s East Mountains—including Edgewood, Moriarty, and surrounding areas—will pause routine operations in observance of Juneteenth.

Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the effective end of slavery in the United States.

The Town of Edgewood has confirmed a full closure of municipal offices and the public library for the day.

Essential services such as emergency response will remain on duty. Details are available at their official website

In Moriarty, city offices will also close on June 19, as noted on the official town calendar.

Bernalillo County, which serves communities including Cedar Crest, Tijeras, Sandia Park and other unincorporated areas, has confirmed that county offices will be closed for the holiday

However, essential services such as trash and recycling will operate on their normal schedule.

The East Mountain Transfer Station will remain open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the BernCo official website

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) will be closed on Thursday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth as well.

All state offices will be closed for the holiday and will reopen on Friday, June 20, on a normal schedule. More details are available at mvd.newmexico.gov.

First Financial Credit Union has confirmed that all of its branches across New Mexico will also be closed. Visit ffnm.org for online service options.

In towns where no official announcements have been made—such as Mountainair, Madrid and Cerrillos—municipal offices and private businesses are expected to maintain regular hours unless otherwise stated.

Residents are encouraged to check with local offices or businesses directly for specific holiday schedules.

While many public and private services pause, Juneteenth events and community gatherings will offer space for reflection and celebration throughout the state.
