Town authorities are warning the public about a recent scam involving individuals impersonating Edgewood officials to collect money from residents.

The scam was carried out through emails and phone calls claiming to be from the “City of Edgewood,” a title that does not reflect the town’s official designation.

In response, the town of Edgewood used its website and social media to quickly alert the community.

“The Town quickly posted on its website and social media page to alert the community of the scam,” said Community Liaison Linda Burke.

Authorities are advising residents not to share personal information or send money if they receive suspicious emails or phone calls.

According to the New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ), best practices to protect against scams include:

  • Keeping personal information secure
  • Never sharing passwords
  • Avoiding suspicious links

No further incidents have been reported since the initial alerts.

“Since then, we have not heard from any residents regarding further instances of phone or email scams claiming to be from the ‘City of Edgewood,’” Burke said.

She emphasized the need for awareness. “It is important for residents to be vigilant in protecting their personal information and skeptical of unsolicited phone calls and emails,” she added.

Residents who have been contacted or have information about the scam are encouraged to report it to the NMDOJ by calling (505) 490-4060 or by submitting a report online.
More information on scam prevention and identity theft can be found at the NMDOJ website.
