Town Councilors in Bernalillo Monday evening approved the disposal of dozens of pieces of decommissioned information technology equipment.

Photographs included in the agenda show items such as computer DVD decks, printers, power supplies, landline phone handsets and laptops; some of the items appear to have been manufactured at least two decades ago. The condition of almost every item is listed as “bad” or “poor.”

Town staff say the latest discarding is part of an ongoing process by the IT department to remove obsolete devices from its inventory.

Any sensitive information has been wiped from each of the devices via a sanitization process vetted by the U.S. Department of Defense. The next step is for the old tech to be stripped for recycling at the Eagle Rock Convenience Center in Albuquerque.

Councilors also reviewed the proposed infrastructure capital improvement plan (ICIP) for the 2027 to 2031 fiscal years. Four new projects are among the 21 being considered for inclusion in the plan to be submitted to the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration.

Those are a new police station, a disaster recovery site, a community kitchen and a truck for the Planning and Zoning Department.

The total price tag for all the items is just under $87.93 million, of which $9.4 million is already funded.

That money is earmarked for three projects:

Bernalillo has $8 million of the $10 million cost of a new fire station in hand, with plans for the remainder to be placed in the fiscal year 2027 budget.

The proposal also includes $20 million for wastewater treatment plant improvements. The town has $750,000 set aside for the project, with plans to put $16.25 million in the fiscal year 2027 budget and fund the remainder the following year.

Another $650,000 is earmarked for water system improvements. The final $2.5 million of the project’s cost would be budgeted for fiscal year 2027.

Monday’s introduction of the ICIP clears the way for adoption of the plan at a later meeting.

Councilors also approved the reappointment of Dominick Lepore to the Planning and Zoning Commission.
