The ABQ BioPark has a new, “good looking” guest after the arrival of Elok, a 24-year-old male Sumatran orangutan.

Elok, pronounced El-ick, joins the BioPark from the Oklahoma City Zoo as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Orangutan Species Survival Plan (SSP). This collaborative effort aims to support the long-term conservation of this critically endangered species.

According to the BioPark, Elok’s move is a carefully coordinated plan to enhance genetic diversity and healthy social structures within the North American orangutan population. Sumatran orangutans face severe threats in the wild, including habitat loss due to palm oil plantations and agriculture, as well as poaching and the illegal pet trade.

Known for his engaging personality, curiosity, intelligence, and artistic abilities, Elok, which means

“Elok” means “good looking” in Malay,  previously made headlines for helping create what is believed to be the world’s first NFT designed by an orangutan. An NFT, or non-fungible token, is a digital certificate of ownership represented by a digital art piece.

“We’re excited to welcome Elok to the BioPark,” said Lynn Tupa, Associate Director for the BioPark. “Every animal that joins our community is part of a larger story about protecting species for the future, and Elok’s arrival shows the importance of partnerships and the vital role zoos play in conservation. We’re proud to provide him with a space where he can thrive, and we know our guests will fall in love with him just as quickly as we have.”

The BioPark said Elok arrived on May 29 and underwent a careful acclimation period before being introduced to his new habitat. He is currently exploring his new surroundings and will be gradually introduced to the other orangutans. The BioPark’s Asia habitat offers plenty of opportunities for Elok to explore, climb and swing.

His transfer supports the SSP’s recommendations, which may include future breeding opportunities. The BioPark prioritizes the animals’ well-being in all introductions.
