Democratic gubernatorial candidate Deb Haaland met with veterans groups in Santa Fe Wednesday to discuss their concerns and priorities for the state.

During a press conference, Haaland addressed the challenges faced by New Mexico’s veterans, citing cuts to services and staffing at the Department of Veterans Affairs under the Trump Administration.

Haaland outlined her commitment to strengthening the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services, addressing gaps in veterans programs resulting from federal funding cuts, and establishing programs that recognize veterans’ skills for the civilian workforce. She also pledged to crack down on businesses that exploit veterans.

“Veterans know something in their core: real strength comes from standing together. Service means sacrifice,” said Haaland, whose mother was in the Navy and father was in the Marines. “And freedom requires constant vigilance and action, and I will always work to ensure our veterans receive the benefits they deserve.”

Jose Vasquez, U.S. Army Veteran and Executive Director of Common Defense, announced his organization’s endorsement of Haaland. Haaland also announced the formation of “Vets for Deb,” an affinity group to support her campaign.

“Veterans know what real leadership looks like, and Deb Haaland is a real leader who has never backed down from a fight that matters. She is committed to defending our democracy, stands up for Native communities and veterans who have too often been left behind, she’s shown us what public service is supposed to be,” Vasquez said. “Our members are proud to stand with her because she’s one of us—someone who prioritizes people over politics and fights like hell for the democracy and future veterans like us swore to defend.”

The “Vets for Deb” group aims to engage voters who feel overlooked by the current presidential administration.

Haaland also addressed potential impacts on veterans due to federal budget cuts, including job losses at the VA, reductions in Medicaid and SNAP benefits, and cuts to Small Business Administration programs that support veteran-owned businesses.

Sandoval County Commissioner Josh Jones, an Air Force Veteran  and member of “Vets for Deb,”  expressed confidence in Haaland’s commitment to veterans.

“We can trust Deb to fight for veterans,” said Jones, a former Field Representative under Haaland. “Deb’s strong record shows that she understands what veterans go through and the services we deserve for serving our country.”
