The Village of Tijeras is donating a firetruck to the City of Guaymas in the state of Sonora in Mexico.
The Village Council unanimously approved a resolution to donate the 2006 pumper tanker during its meeting Monday evening. The truck is valued at $15,000.
Mayor Jake Bruton plans on driving the truck to Guaymas later this month.
The village councilors expressed support for the donation, which they said will prevent the truck from going to waste as it is no longer needed by Tijeras.
This is not the first time Tijeras has donated firefighting equipment to the Departamento de Bomberos Guaymas, a volunteer fire department.
Bruton said when the village contracted with Bernalillo County for fire suppression, it took “stacks and stacks” of surplus equipment to Guaymas.
The resolution passed Monday evening states that the “firetruck remains in operable condition and has the potential to serve a vital public safety purpose in a community with limited response resources.”
The donation is considered a humanitarian act that could save lives and improve public safety while also promoting goodwill and international cooperation.
