Wildlife is out and about in Edgewood and the town officials are dealing with some of the impacts.
A bird nest built on the exhaust on a water truck recently caused a small fire when the truck was idling. The heat from the exhaust caught the nest on fire. This melted the coating off of wiring on the truck.
Town Manager Nina McCracken told commissioners during a Tuesday evening meeting that the truck was idling while filling up with water when the driver noticed smoke and fire.
“I know the bird’s nest didn’t make it, I can’t tell you about the bird,” she said.
And the bird nest isn’t the only wildlife incident the Town of Edgewood has had to address.
A baby snake was recently found inside the library and had to be escorted back outside.
McCracken said Parks and Recreation Manager Jimmy Martinez moved the snake out of the building. She said Martinez reported that the snake did rattle, but “I don’t know if it was a rattlesnake or just a bullsnake being a rattling.”
Bullsnakes are non-venemous snakes that often mimic rattlesnakes when threatened. They have similar markings to rattlesnakes.
Edgewood officials are urging residents to be aware of the wildlife and to take necessary precautions to protect themselves, their children and their livestock.
