The next phase of the Isleta Boulevard Corridor Project has been approved by the Bernalillo County Commission, marking a significant investment in local infrastructure. The project, which stems from an initial site assessment finalized in 2019, aims to comprehensively redesign and construct improvements along Isleta Boulevard.
The approved phase focuses on enhancing the Isleta Boulevard Corridor from Malpais Road SW to Luchetti Road SW. The improvements are part of the reconstruction of Phase 1 and build upon previous transportation and sector plans, aligning with the county’s long-range transportation objectives.
Key upgrades planned for the corridor include new pavement, buffered bike lanes, landscaping and irrigation, traffic signals with adaptive signalization controls, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), lighting, pavement markings, signage, and wider ADA-compliant sidewalks.
The total construction funding amounts to $11.5 million, with contributions from various sources. Federal funds account for $2,990,400 million, State House Bill 2 funds contribute $8 million, and the county provides $509,600 thousand in matching funds.
Construction is slated to begin in the fall and is expected to take at least 18 months to complete.
“This project has been in the works for several years due to antiquated infrastructure,” Commissioner Frank Baca said. “This represents a substantial investment in the safety of our roadways and sidewalks. I would like to thank the state and federal governments for their contributions. I look forward to the startup date and community members will be made fully aware of any changes to traffic patterns as it progresses.”
