An inmate at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) died Wednesday morning, despite life-saving efforts by staff and medical personnel.

According to a press release from Bernalillo County, the inmate was a 45-year-old female who had been booked into MDC on Monday morning at approximately 6 a.m. Early Wednesday, around 5:30 a.m., she was found unresponsive. MDC staff and the UNM Hospital medical team responded and administered life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at 5:48 a.m. The identity of the inmate is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. As per standard procedure, the incident is currently under investigation by the MDC Office of Professional Standards and BCSO.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator will determine the official cause of death.
