National Senior Health and Fitness Day is May 28 and the Department of Senior Affairs is partnering with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico to celebrate with an interactive health event for adults 50 and older.

The event is set for Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center.

National Senior Health and Fitness Day is a nationwide movement to promote physical activity and wellness among older adults. Over 100,000 people are expected to join in events around the country, including Albuquerque’s.

“Staying active as we age is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy, vibrant life,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Whether it’s walking in the Bosque, playing pickleball or signing up for a fitness class, we’ve got something for everyone to enjoy. Let’s get moving, Albuquerque.”

Participants can check out various activities, including group exercise demonstrations for tai chi, yoga and dance. The event will also feature a mini-health fair, health screenings, low-impact walking events and a climbing wall.

“Participating in activities that promote fitness is essential for not just our physical health, but our mental and social well-being as well,” said Dr. Latha Shankar, chief medical officer and VP of health care delivery at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico. “We are proud to collaborate with the City of Albuquerque to create a supportive environment where older adults can come together to enhance their health and enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle.”

This event is free and open to everyone ages 50 and up.
