Staff report

The Corrales Historical Society’s Speaker Series will feature Sheila Fox presenting “Ladino Music of Ancient Spain” on Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m.

The event will take place at the Historic Old San Ysidro Church, located at 966 Old Church Road, across from Casa San Ysidro. Admission is free and open to the public.

Fox, a singer, musician and sound healer, will lead attendees on a musical journey exploring the songs of the Sephardi Jews of Spain. The performance will include Romansas (ballads), Koplas (narrative songs with historical and political themes), and Kantikas (lyrical songs). Each song will be introduced with a translation and story highlighting the period of peace and co-creation in Iberia during Moorish rule. The Ladino language, a mix of pre-Castilian Spanish, Hebrew, and Aramaic, will be featured.

Fox will be accompanied by Corraleño Rudy Miera on guitar, Lynx from Placitas on frame drum, and Danza Estilizada artist Ysabela Trujllo. Fox, who also performs with her band The Kosher Red Hots, has won an NEA award for preserving Ladino and Yiddish songs.

Seating is limited to 150 people, and the church will be closed to entry once capacity is reached. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as saving seats is not permitted.
