Albuquerque City Councilors approved a pair of economic development projects expected to bring dozens of jobs to the city’s west side.

Mesa Media Group got the OK to build on a 60-acre plot adjacent to Double Eagle II Airport. According to a city news release, the company will expand its production ability, with six sound stages, 60,000 square feet of office space and a building used for construction of sets.

The release says Mesa’s expansion will create 24 new full-time jobs and more than 750 studio production jobs.

Representatives of nearby neighborhood associations had asked the county to overturn the Environmental Planning Commission’s decision to approve a site plan for the project.

Despite the neighborhoods’ opposition, councillors voted unanimously to let it move forward.

“This is a major win for the Westside and all of Albuquerque,” District 1 Councilor Louie Sanchez said. “These are good-paying jobs closer to home, reducing commutes and pollution, and strengthening our local economy. This smart growth initiative demonstrates our commitment to fostering a thriving and connected city.”

Councilors also approved the use of Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) incentives totaling $600,000 to support the expansion of Vitality Works, Inc., which makes herbal, vitamin, and nutraceutical supplements.

The approved LEDA funds will contribute to a $5.2 million expansion project, including a new warehouse, upgraded production areas, and utility improvements. The expansion is projected to create 18 new full-time jobs with an average salary of $46,429, plus comprehensive benefits.

Max Gruner, the city’s economic development director, told councilors the expansion had long been planned, but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues.

Sanchez, who championed the deal, said the company has demonstrated commitments to the city and to sustainability.

“This partnership aligns perfectly with our economic development goals,” Sanchez said, “supporting a growing local business in a key industry and creating quality opportunities for our residents.”
