The Grief Center of New Mexico will host a free three-day, two-night camp for children who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

Camp Corazón will include camp-like activities such as a challenge course, bonfire, songs, games and swimming for children ages 7 up to seniors in high school.

The camp will be held from June 27 to 29 in Torreon. To register, a $40 deposit is required per camper, which will be refunded upon attendance.

According to a press release, Camp Corazón “provides a unique and important opportunity for kids who are grieving the death of someone important in their life to share their experiences and memories with peers.”

The intention of the camp is for grieving children to learn to navigate the complex feelings of losing someone important in their lives and to learn age-appropriate coping skills to help them endure the grief through a supportive environment.

“Camp Corazón provides an opportunity for bereaved young people to learn how to live with their grief,” said Mickey Kivitz, The Grief Center’s Director of Education and Camp Corazón Director. “Campers get to experience a weekend full of activities, fun, and healing, where nobody is ‘the only one’ living with death. It’s a transformative experience for campers and volunteers.”

Registration is open until June 6, with priority given to children who reside in Northeastern New Mexico.

Volunteers and sponsors are also welcome. The average sponsorship cost is $350 per camper. Donations are tax-deductible and can be made at www.griefnm.org/donate
