The East Mountains could be without power Thursday as PNM is considering a Public Safety Power Shutoff.

PNM, the state’s largest electricity provider, announced late Wednesday that it is considering shutting down the power in the East Mountains, Santa Fe and Las Vegas on Thursday as extreme weather conditions included forecast wind gusts up to 70 MPH are expected in those areas.

PNM outage warning

The Independent previously reported that PNM announced on Feb. 17 plans to shut off electricity in areas with higher fire risks during high winds.

PNM has not yet decided to implement a Public Safety Power Shutdown (PSPS) but is “monitoring the forecast and will likely make a decision on Thursday morning.”

PNM asks residents in those areas to prepare an outage kit or identify alternate power sources for emergency needs. Visit PNM.com/wildfire-safety for more on how to prepare.
