The Placitas Community Library will host geographers Daniel and Susan Arreola for a talk entitled “The Geographer’s Eye: Sight and Insight” on March 29 at 2 p.m.

The Arreolas will lead an interactive discussion exploring how geographers perceive place and landscape. Audience members will participate in a slide exercise designed to illustrate the two dimensions of how people see places and landscapes: “Sight” and “Insight.”

Daniel Arreola is a cultural geographer who specializes in Mexican-American borderlands and Hispanic/Latino populations in the United States. He has received numerous awards for his research and publications, including the Paul P. Vouras Medal and the Carl O. Sauer Distinguished Scholarship Award. He is the author of seven books, two of which received awards from the American Association of Geographers.

Susan Arreola is a former research planner for the City of Phoenix and holds a Ph.D. in urban geography. She has taught at Arizona State University and Scottsdale Community College and has served on the boards of Jardineros de Placitas and the Placitas Community Library.

The Arreolas have spent the last decade traveling extensively, living by their retirement motto, “See this world before the next.”

The event is free and open to the public.
