The Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners has announced its legislative priorities for the 2025 state legislative session, with District 5 highlighting the unique needs of its constituents.

District 5, which includes parts of the East Mountains, is seeking funding for several projects to improve infrastructure and enhance community spaces.

“District 5 is a unique blend of natural beauty and urban living,” said District 5 Commissioner Eric Olivas, who represents the district. “Our residents deserve safe roads, quality infrastructure and access to community resources.”

Key legislative priorities for District 5 include:

  • Los Vecinos Community Center: $1.5 million for improvements at the Los Vecinos Community Center in Tijeras.
  • Chip Seal of East Mountain Roads: $1 million to replace and resurface deteriorated paved and unpaved roads in the East Mountains.
  • Moriarty Road Paving: $600,000 to improve Moriarty Road near Chilili.
  • East Mountain Sports Complex: $500,000 to improve facilities, surrounding landscaping and parking at the East Mountain Sports Complex in Sandia Park.

These priorities reflect the district’s commitment to its rural and urban communities.

“We need to invest in our infrastructure to support our growing population and ensure that all residents have access to the resources they need,” Olivas said.

The county’s overall legislative priorities include affordable housing, behavioral health care, public safety, early childhood education, and animal care facilities.
