The Town of Mountainair has adopted a property maintenance ordinance designed to ensure the community remains clean, safe and welcoming for all residents.

The ordinance sets guidelines that hold property owners responsible for following to help keep the town beautiful and free from hazards. According to Mayor Peter Nieto, the guidelines include maintaining weeds to reduce fire risks and preserve the town’s charm, removing dead trees and hazardous branches that may pose safety or fire hazards and ensuring properties are free of litter, debris and improperly disposed of animal waste.

“Please be mindful of cleaning up after your pets, especially in public spaces, so we can all enjoy Mountainair to the fullest,” Nieto said.

The ordinance also bans inoperable vehicles from being stored outside property boundaries. Owners will have 90 days to either repair or remove these vehicles before the town steps in to address the issue at the property owner’s expense.

Violations can be reported by filling out a Property Maintenance Violation Form, which will be available starting Feb. 6,  at Town Hall and online through the town’s website. Once a violation is confirmed, property owners will receive a written notice and have 60 days to correct the issue. If the problem is not resolved, a second notice will be issued with an additional 30 days before fines or further action is taken. Property owners can also appeal any violation by submitting an Appeal Form, available at Town Hall and online after Feb. 6.

“In an effort to keep Mountainair clean, we’re excited to announce a town-wide clean-up initiative,” Nieto said.

To help residents dispose of trash and debris, the Town is offering free tip tickets for the Estancia Valley Solid Waste Authority Transfer Stations. To qualify, you must live within the town limits, and the property being cleaned must also be within town limits.

The town clean-up begins Jan. 13.

“Let’s come together to keep Mountainair healthy, safe and beautiful,” Nieto said.
