Mayor Peter Nieto announced  Harris-Hanlon Mortuary has bestowed the Mountainair Cemetery to the Town of Mountainair.

In a Facebook post, Nieto shared his thoughts and expectations about the transfer.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Grant and Karen Preston for entrusting the Town of Mountainair with the responsibility of overseeing and maintaining the cemetery,” Nieto said.

The following council meetings will discuss this property’s management details and procedures.

Grant Preston, owner of the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary, will assist with this transition, ensuring the Public Works team assists with the gravedigging necessary for the project.

The Harris-Hanlon Mortuary has served Moriarty and Mountainair since its establishment in 1908.

After several owners, expansions and changes, Larry and Trudy Preston, along with their son Grant, acquired the mortuaries in 1991. After their retirement and Trudy’s passing in 2000, Grant and his wife Karen took over and currently run the business.

The mayor urged patience and understanding during the transitional period and is grateful for this new responsibility.

“Thank you to the Mountainair Town Council for their approval for this land,” he said.
