Good news for fans of local radio: KUPR, a beloved community radio station in Placitas, is gearing up to celebrate a decade of serving the community.

KUPR relies solely on listener support. With no public funding, the station thrives thanks to the dedication of its all-volunteer staff and the generosity of its listeners. To help KUPR continue its important work, the station is encouraging donations during this year-end giving season.

A Community Hub with a Rich History

KUPR will host a special event Jan.18, from 2-4 p.m.  to celebrate its history and share plans for the upcoming year. The event, led by KUPR DJ and entertainer Keith Allen West (rumored to appear as the Phantom of the Opera), will delve into the station’s journey.

The story begins in 2013 when a group of passionate Placitas residents saw an opportunity to create a local radio station. Faced with challenges like securing equipment, funding and a location, the group persevered, leading to a construction permit in 2014. By May 4, 2015, KUPR’s dream became a reality, hitting the airwaves for the first time.

Since then, the station has grown immensely, thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers. Broadcasting hours expanded, online streaming began and the station even moved to a larger space. Over the years, KUPR has hosted countless live music events, produced thousands of hours of programming and provided a vital platform for the community.
