New Mexico’s State Canvass Board unanimously certified the results of the 2024 General Election at its Nov. 26 meeting in Santa Fe.
The State Canvass Board is composed of the Governor, Secretary of State and Chief Justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court.
“The 2024 General Election was run with efficiency and integrity by the state’s election administrators and every New Mexican should have the highest level of confidence in these official election results,” Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver said in a press release. “I want to thank the members of the State Canvass Board for their work this morning and my staff at the Secretary of State’s Office, our county clerks and their staff, the poll workers, our vendors and our local, state and federal partners who were the backbone of this successful election.”
The official, certified results for the 2024 General Election are available on the Secretary of State’s website.
During the meeting, the Board signed the certificate of canvass that makes the results of the 2024 General Election official and also ordered automatic recounts in two contests.
The New Mexico House District 57 race saw 16,618 New Mexicans cast their votes, with former Rio Rancho Public Schools board member and Republican Catherine Cullen finishing 8,374 votes and Democrat Michelle Sandoval garnering 8,244 votes. The New Mexico Secretary of State’s election night results have both Cullen and Sandoval with 50% of the vote.
The Sandoval County Clerk’s Office conducted a recount of the House 57 race Dec. 3. Clerk Anne Brady-Romero said the recount process will take roughly three days to complete.
The District 57 seat has been held by Jason Harper since 2013. Harper announced in March that he would not run again.
The election for Los Alamos County Commissioner (At Large) is also going to a recount.
According to New Mexico election law, an automatic recount is triggered when the margin between the two candidates is less than “.25%, .5%, or 1%, depending on the race.”
The State Canvass Board will certify the automatic recount results at its Dec. 16 meeting.
The Board also released some voter turnout numbers from the 2024 General Election:
- Total Registered Voters eligible to participate in this election – 1,382,761
- Total Voter Turnout – 928,290 (67.13%)
- Absentee Turnout – 111,403 (12.00%)
- Early Voting Turnout – 556,281 (59.93%)
- Election Day Turnout – 252,515 (27.20%)
- Hand Tally/Provisional – 8,091 (0.87%)
- Use of Same-Day Voter Registration (Early Voting and Election Day) – 52,358
- Election Day SDR transactions – 25,485
