The gym at Estancia Valley Classical Academy was filled to the brim this Veterans Day with members of the armed services and those who wished to recognize them for their valor. Students including EVCA student government, teachers, and faculty pitched in to show their appreciation with the annual Veteran’s Day Breakfast and Flag Ceremony, an event filled with singing, poetry, and of course, a hot meal.

The ceremony began with remarks from EVCA Executive Director Jennifer Rivera and spotlighted student and faculty talent. The event opened with a trumpet reveille by Emily Holmes, the pledge of allegiance led by EVCA student government member Olivia Hassler and the national anthem led by Elizabeth Beukelman.

Poetry readings included recitations from Mrs. Randi Davis’s 2nd grade class and student government member Tessa Stanley. The event also featured a musical performance from theater and moral philosophy teacher Ms. Vicky Vail and student government member Samuel Bentley’s reading of the lyrics to Johnny Cash’s “Ragged Old Flag,” which received roaring applause from the crowd.

“Veterans Day honors all of those who served the country in war and in peace, dead or alive, although it is largely intended to thank you — our living veterans — for your service,” Rivera said. “Thank you so very much for everything that you have done, all of your time and sacrifices that you’ve put into serving our country. We are extremely, extremely grateful and appreciative of you.”
