The price of target practice is going up.
Albuquerque Parks & Recreation Friday announced a $2 increase in daily target range fees at Shooting Range Park.
The increase, the first since 2001, means the standard fee for adults will be $8, while junior and senior fees will be $7. All other fees will remain unchanged.
The department says the fee hike, approved by the City Council in the fiscal year 2025 budget, will generate about $30,000 a year, which will go into the general fund.
“This modest fee adjustment is long overdue as costs to operate the park have risen substantially over the years,” said Parks & Recreation Department director Dave Simon.
According to a news release announcing the fee increase, there are numerous improvement projects underway at Shooting Range Park, on the West Mesa.
Emily Moore, a spokesperson for the department, said the road leading to the park was repaved a few years ago, and the city has made repairs to the water system, added new signage and is working on an improved safety communication system and improvements to the park’s Wi-Fi system.
A project to renovate buildings used for training and classroom instruction kicks off Nov. 1, the release states, and a new archery range is currently in the planning and design phase.
In August, firearms instructors told the City Council the range is in disrepair and lacking in cleanliness.
City officials promote the range as a safe environment for shooters of all ages to learn and practice shooting sports and safe firearm skills, with trained staff always on site.
