In today’s evolving economy, ensuring our youth are equipped with the practical skills necessary to succeed is more vital than ever. I’m Phil Ramirez, and as your candidate for Senate District 12, I am committed to an educational initiative that prepares our students not just for any job, but for good jobs that strengthen our community’s economic backbone.

From carpenters and electricians to plumbers and automotive technicians, skilled tradespeople play a pivotal role in every facet of our lives. Yet, for too long, these critical education paths have been underemphasized in favor of a more traditional college preparatory curriculum.

My plan to expand vocational training programs in our schools is a pragmatic approach to education reform. By integrating courses such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and automotive technology into the school curriculum, we are not only diversifying educational opportunities but also preparing students for immediate employment opportunities upon graduation. This not only meets the needs of students who wish to enter the workforce directly but also fills a critical gap in our local job market.

Strengthening partnerships between our schools and local unions is a cornerstone of my initiative. These partnerships will provide students with apprenticeship opportunities, offering them hands-on experience and a pathway to union jobs that offer fair wages, job security, and substantial benefits. These are careers that offer not just jobs but a chance at lifelong security and prosperity, which is more than commendable—it’s essential for the health of our community.

As a testament to my belief in this path, my own son will soon be entering the local plumbing and pipe fitting training center, embarking on a career that promises both skill development and job security. This personal connection to trades education only deepens my commitment to expanding these opportunities for all our students.

Aligning our educational programs with the needs of local industries ensures that the training provided is directly applicable to the job market. This relevance enhances the employability of our graduates and supports local economic growth, creating a cycle of opportunity that feeds back into our community, enhancing everyone’s quality of life.

This vision for trades education has garnered the endorsement of every major trades union in our district. This isn’t just a nod of approval from industry experts—it’s a resounding affirmation that our plan is both necessary and expected by those who know our workforce needs best.

Investing in trades education is investing in our community’s future. It promises not only to enhance the lives of individual students but also to bolster our local economy and ensure a thriving middle class. It’s a plan that transcends political divides because it’s based on common sense, fiscal responsibility, and a deep commitment to community values.

As we approach election day, I urge you to consider the long-term benefits of a robust trades education program. A vote for me, Phil Ramirez, is a vote for practical solutions that will provide our youth with the skills they need to build successful careers and contribute positively to our community.

Phil Ramirez is a 7th generation New Mexican, local business owner, seasoned project manager and union refrigeration journeyman, now running as the Democratic candidate for Senate District 12.
