Author and beloved local leader Ben Steinlage died Sept. 23, leaving a huge hole in the Mountainair community.

Steinlage and his wife, Sandi, were heavily involved in community events, including the popular Christmas Land drive that would see the community building packed with donated Christmas gifts.

“The Town of Mountainair is saddened by the passing of Ben Steinlage. Ben was a local author and would often be involved in local events,” the Town of Mountainair posted on social media. “It was their Christmas Land that we modeled last year’s Christmas event after and hope to continue the event for years to come. We ask that you keep Sandi & their family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Rest in Peace, Ben. You will be missed.”

Steinlage, a retired printing consultant, had six children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

According to his Amazon bio, Steinlage spent time writing and helping other writers after his retirement.

Steinlage has written more than thirty books — though not all were published — of historical fiction, murder mysteries, fantasy and short stories. It wasn’t until 2007 that his wife decided it was time to share his works with the world that he became a published author.

“He was an intelligent, engaging, entertaining man. He was concerned about people. He had a wonderful community feeling. Always trying to help anyone we found out that needed help in any way. He loved Christmas, giving him the idea to put on Christmas Land for everyone,” Sandi said in a social media post from the Town of Mountainair. “My beloved husband and friend has passed to a higher plane. He will be missed tremendously.”

A Memorial for Steinlage is planned for early November. A notice will be posted in the community when the exact date is finalized.
